Vitamin K2 Effect - Task and Function of Vitamin K2 in the Body
Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) together with vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) forms the group of fat-soluble K vitamins. Vitamin K1 and K2 each have different tasks and functions in the body: Vitamin K1 helps the body to activate important protein building blocks and thus contributes to normal blood clotting.
Vitamin K2, in turn, activates the so-called matrix GLA protein (also called MGP) and the peptide hormone osteocalcin. The matrix GLA protein binds the calcium in the blood and thus prevents the calcium from being deposited in the vessel walls. The osteocalcin, in turn, helps the body to ultimately store the calcium in the bones.
Put simply: Vitamin K2 ensures that the calcium absorbed from food is transported to the right places and incorporated there. In this way, vitamin K2 contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
